Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Abdul Nasser Hemti and Governor of the Central Bank of Syria Dr. Hazem Qarfoul discussed in Tehran today ways to expand and strengthen banking relations and the establishment of a joint bank and the implementation of bank agreements signed between the two countries and facilitate the activity of businessmen and economic activists.
During the meeting, the two sides agreed to establish a joint banking committee comprising representatives of the banks of both countries and under the auspices of the central banks in Iran and Syria to follow up the implementation of the memorandums of understanding signed between them.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria stressed Syria's keenness to cooperate with Iranian banks, and welcomed the transfer of Iranian technological expertise to Syrian banks.
Qarfoul pointed to the work to overcome all obstacles in the field of banking relations between the two countries, said, "These relations are on track and contribute to achieve aspirations on the development of banking cooperation between Iran and Syria."
Qarfoul pointed out that the results of the current talks would motivate Iranian and Syrian banks and companies to establish more cooperation among them, stressing the dedication of efforts to implement the agreements signed between the two countries accurately and quickly.
For his part, Hamti noted the memorandums of cooperation concluded between the central banks in Iran and Syria, and looked forward to taking measures by the banks of the two countries to implement these agreements in a way that enhances bilateral economic relations.
He stressed the full support of efforts aimed at developing cooperation between Iranian and Syrian banks, saying that economic relations between the two countries have entered a new stage.
He added that the memorandums of cooperation signed between the two banks carry important messages to companies and constitute a serious step towards expanding the exchange between businessmen and traders in both countries, calling for accelerating the pace of establishing a joint Iranian-Syrian bank within the framework of the cooperation document signed between the two sides, stressing Iran's readiness to transfer its experiences in the field of technology. In turn, representatives of Iranian banks during the meeting reviewed the process of cooperation with Syrian banks and expressed their readiness to upgrade the level of bilateral banking relations.
Representatives of Iranian banks also presented proposals on the use of national currencies in the framework of trade exchange, strengthening bank credit lines, removing obstacles from bank guarantees and activating the system of joint payment cards between nationals of the two countries and other areas of common interest.
