Taxes: Government delays tax return due to coronavirus

The deadline to complete your tax return has been extended by 11 days.


The Minister of Public Accounts, Gérald Darmanin, announced Tuesday that he postponed from April 9 to 20 the opening of the declaration on income and that he suspended tax controls especially in the sectors most affected by the coronavirus crisis . An idea that was in the cards for a few days.

"I made the decision, after informing the Prime Minister, to postpone the tax return for a week," he said on TF1. "We should have declared income from April 9. We will do it from April 20, ”he said.

The Minister, who referred taxpayers to the online tax site to find out the time available to them to complete their declaration according to their region, also indicated that people who file their declaration on paper could file it until June 12 , one month longer than initially planned.

Tax audits suspended

The Minister also stressed that the current tax audits would be suspended and that there would be no new ones during this period of confinement in sectors "at a standstill" such as catering.

“In this extremely particular period, I gave the order […] to suspend the controls which existed before the crisis […] and not to effectively carry out the tax controls in particular in the fields which are stopped and to be rather in support for businesses, ”he said.
