(CNN) - After hundreds of serious lung diseases and five deaths, the American Medical Association (AMA) urges people not to use electronic cigarette products, Dr. Patrice Harris, president, said Monday of the association, in a statement. He also asked the US Food and Drug Administration. (FDA, for its acronym in English) that accelerates the regulation of electronic cigarettes, eliminates unregulated products from the market and prohibits the flavors and marketing that seeks to attract young people.

"In light of the growing reports of lung diseases associated with electronic cigarettes across the country, WADA urges the public to avoid using electronic cigarette products until health officials investigate and understand the cause of these diseases." Harris said in the statement, recommending users of electronic cigarettes to observe adverse health effects and doctors discuss with patients the "dangers of electronic cigarettes, including toxins and carcinogens."

“We should not wait while electronic cigarettes continue without being regulated. We urge the US Food and Drug Administration to accelerate the regulation of electronic cigarettes and eliminate all unregulated products from the market. We also ask the FDA to immediately ban flavors, as well as marketing practices, that improve the attractiveness of electronic cigarette products for young people.

"Increasing awareness of the harmful nature of these products and their addictive power is the only way to prevent another generation of Americans from developing nicotine dependence."

US health officials UU. They announced Friday that they now know at least 450 possible cases of serious lung disease that could be caused by vaping. These cases, which have occurred in 33 states and one jurisdiction, include some cases that are still under investigation by state health officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (CDC) said on Friday that people should consider not using electronic cigarette products while continuing disease research, and those who use them should be monitored for symptoms such as cough, chest pain, vomiting and fever. Electronic cigarettes should never be used by young people, young adults, pregnant women or adults who currently do not use tobacco products, he said.

Health officials say they have not found a definitive cause or a clear connection between cases, but some are focusing on possible leads. The CDC and several state health departments have reported the widespread use of products containing THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive substance in cannabis. On Thursday, New York health officials said their research had found "very high levels" of vitamin E chemical acetate in almost all the vaping products that contained cannabis that were tested.

On Monday, the FDA warned leading electronic cigarette manufacturer Juul Labs about the illegal marketing of its product as a safer alternative to cigarettes and requested more documents on the company's marketing and disclosure practices.
