The Indian Embassy in Damascus held a reception on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday at the Dama Rose Hotel.
In his speech, the Indian Ambassador in Damascus Dr. Hafizur Rahman pointed out that Gandhi was a symbol of love, peace, goodness and humanity throughout his life and led the battle for Indian independence in the face of British colonialism.He gave a wonderful example of the struggle to be emulated in the contemporary day and won the title of Mahatma, which means (Great Spirit).
Ambassador Hafizur Rahman explained that the essence of Gandhi's teachings is that the principle of force is freedom from fear, pointing out that his belief in non-violence has led him to noble and sublime goals.
The President of Damascus University, Dr. Maher Qabakibi, the President of the Syrian Association for the United Nations, Dr. George Jabbour, the President of the Science Fiction Writers Association, Dr. Taleb Omran, and the Indonesian Ambassador in Damascus, Wajid Fawzi, spoke about Gandhi's struggle against racism in South Africa and his support for the Palestinian cause and his life of wisdom. Stressing the need to continue to spread the teachings of Gandhi affected by many countries of the world.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Central Command of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, Dr. Mohsen Bilal and Ammar al-Sibai, during which the unveiling of a painting showing Mahatma Gandhi presented by the artist Jumana Shuja.
On October 2, 1869, Mahatma Gandhi, a pioneer of nonviolence, pioneered the International Day of Non-Violence.
