'There's a sleeping monster next to us': The Milky Way's central black hole is finally revealed

It is 6 a.m. this Thursday in Seattle when a network of more than 350 researchers from around the world broadcasts an exceptional image: the first "photo" of the black hole in the center of the Milky Way.

It was therefore upon waking up that Bruce Balick was able to admire the contours of the massive object that he was the first to have spotted, in 1974, with his colleague astronomer Robert Brown, who has since died.

“I relive the thrill of our discovery”, confides to the Parisian the American, now 79 years old.

“It was a determined 25-year campaign that created the image that was released today.

From Taiwan to Munich, via Washington and Santiago de Chile, seven simultaneous press conferences marked the event presented by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) consortium on Thursday.
