(CNN) - A Taiwanese tourist was arrested and fined for wearing a particularly revealing bikini on the beach on the tourist island of Boracay, recently reopened in the Philippines, local media reported.

The tourist, who has not been identified, caused controversy by putting on a bikini of yarn on the island's famous white sand beaches on October 9, according to the Philippine state news agency (PNA).

PNA reported that the woman was traveling with her boyfriend and that her hotel staff had told her that the swimsuit was "inappropriate", but that she was wearing it anyway.

“The hotel management told them not to do it, but they said it was an art form,” said Natividad Bernardino, head of the Boracay Inter-Agency Management and Rehabilitation Group (BIAMRG) in a telephone interview with PNA.

The woman was arrested the next day when she was wearing another thread bikini to the beach. A police spokesman said she was fined PHP 2,500 ($ 48.40) for the "erotic" outfit.

The municipality's police chief, Jess Baylon, told PNA that while the couple's domestic customs may be different, "they have to respect our culture and tradition, and our proper decorum."

Located in the center of the Philippines, Boracay is one of the most famous beach destinations in the world.

It reopened last October after a major cleaning operation to improve facilities and improve water quality. New strict regulations have also been enacted, such as limits for the transport of combustion engines and the ban on single-use plastics.
