Why coronavirus may delay the release of iPhone 5G

2020-03-11T05:25:19.102Z

Apple is the only manufacturer in the top 10 worldwide not yet offering a 5G smartphone.

Will go out, not go out? Nothing has stopped the flow of rumors surrounding the release of each new iPhone for more than a decade. Not even the coronavirus. Quite the contrary. The current epidemic only accentuates the vagueness around the highly anticipated launch of one or more iPhone in 5G. This while all the major Chinese and Korean competitors of the American brand already have several 5G terminals.

Apple had bet not to include 5G in its 2019 roadmap. 5G was expected for 2020, with an alleged iPhone launch in April, and not in September as it has been for several years. Alas, the covid-19 thwarts the brand's plans. When Chinese factories that work directly or indirectly for the brand stopped operating, the group's engineers were unable to move around. They cannot go to China to do the latest product testing. The ban runs at least until April. Given the time required for production, production should therefore not be launched before July, which suggests a marketing of the iPhone 5G in October or November. The way is clear for competitors from Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Sony .... all have already started to market 5G smartphones.

The coronavirus has already had a negative impact on Apple: it has already lowered its sales forecasts for the current quarter. The brand had chosen to close its stores in China for ten days in February. Its sales would have dropped by 61% in February in China, according to the Chinese Academy of Information and Communication Technologies, close to the Chinese government. This figure has been taken up by many American media, without being contradicted by the brand.
