In view of the high energy prices, France wants to give all people with low incomes a one-off 100 euros.

About 38 million people are to receive this "inflation compensation", as France's Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Thursday on the French broadcaster TF1.

The money should be transferred automatically, for example from the employer or the employment office, said Castex.

The first payments are to be made to the people at the end of December.

The necessary 3.8 billion euros should be paid from the general state budget.

Castex was confident that France would still achieve the targeted deficit of five percent of gross domestic product in the coming year.

Petrol and diesel prices have also skyrocketed in France in recent weeks.

Most recently, they were even above the prices of autumn 2018, when the "yellow vests" began their demonstrations because of the high fuel costs and a huge nationwide wave of protests about the government and its reform policy soon broke out.

Gas prices are now capped until the end of 2022

France also wants to keep gas prices constant for consumers in the coming year.

The price will be capped "throughout the year 2022" and not just as previously planned until April 2022, announced Castex.
