Indonesia: 129 people were killed and 180 were injured in a riot at a football stadium.
October 2, 2022 (Reuters News Agency)
At least 129 people were killed and 180 others were injured tonight (Sunday) in a riot at a soccer stadium in Indonesia, in what appears to be one of the worst stadium disasters in the history of world sports.
The riot started at the end of the game in which Persabaya defeated Arma 2:3, when the fans of the losing team broke into the grass and the police responded with tear gas.
These caused many people to be trampled and suffocated - this is what the East Java police chief in the country, Niko Afinta, said.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered the country's authorities to reassess security at soccer matches after the incident and told the country's soccer association (PSSI) to suspend top league matches pending an investigation, calling it the country's "last soccer tragedy."
The country's chief security minister, Mahfoud MD, said that the stadium was filled beyond its capacity.
According to him, 42,000 tickets were issued for the stadium which should only hold 38,000 people.
Sports Minister Zainedin Amali said that the authorities will re-evaluate the safety issue at football matches and will even consider not allowing crowds to enter the stadiums.
Also, the Indonesian Football Association has started investigating the case.
