A few weeks after the end of heavy fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants, thousands of right-wing Israeli nationalists marched through East Jerusalem on Tuesday.
The so-called flag march was accompanied by a large police presence.
The task force was to prevent the marchers from deviating from the route and prevent violent clashes with Palestinians.
Thousands of Palestinians who saw themselves provoked by the march gathered near the Damascus Gate in the old city.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 17 people were injured in clashes with the police.
A "Day of Wrath" was called for in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Israel claims all of Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the Jewish state.
The Palestinians see the eastern part, including the old town, as the capital of a future state of their own.
The Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem is not internationally recognized.
May saw the worst fighting in years between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and violence broke out in the West Bank.
This was preceded by planned evictions of the houses of Palestinian families in East Jerusalem on land claimed by Jewish settlers and riots at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in the Old City.
After eleven days, an armistice was finally agreed.
