More than a million visitors are expected in Qatar, a country of 2.8 million inhabitants, for the holding of this controversial World Cup.

The supporters fight for the last places.

The number of match tickets sold for the 2022 World Cup reached a total of 2.45 million out of the 3 million available, FIFA announced on Thursday.

This figure corresponds to tickets sold to all categories (general public, FIFA partners, federations, hospitality, etc.).

During a new sales phase organized from July 5 to August 16 on the basis of the “first come, first served” principle, 520,532 additional tickets were sold, said the organizing body of the World Cup.

In June, organizers reported "record demand" for tickets, putting the total sold at the time at 1.2 million.

At the beginning of July, Fifa then mentioned 1.8 million tickets sold.

There are a total of 3,010,679 tickets available for this World Cup.

More than one million visitors expected

Supporters residing in Qatar, the United States, England, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, France, Argentina, Brazil and Germany lead the ticket sales rankings by country of residence , added Fifa.

For the group matches, the international federation clarified that the posters "which had the most success" were Cameroon-Brazil (group G), Brazil-Serbia (group G), Portugal-Uruguay (group H), Costa Rica-Germany (group E) and Australia-Denmark (group D, that of France).

A final phase of sale, called "last minute", is scheduled as the tournament approaches, according to Fifa.

The body will announce the start date of this last phase at the end of September, which will also operate on the principle of “first come, first served” and will last until the end of the competition on December 18.

More than a million visitors are expected in Qatar, a country of 2.8 million inhabitants, for the first World Cup in history in an Arab country.

The holding of this World Cup has been strongly criticized around the world, both for its climatic impact, with air-conditioned stadiums in the middle of the desert, and for the way Doha has treated the migrant workers who built the infrastructure.

Doha stressed that it had since made enormous efforts to improve the lot of foreign workers by imposing a minimum wage (about 270 euros per month).
