Today, exactly 35 years ago, Air Force navigator Ron Arad of the Hammers Squadron was captured after his Phantom F-4 was shot down over Lebanon.

Ron Arad and the pilot fell and reached the ground safely.

An air crew managed to rescue the pilot using a helicopter under fire, as he was hung on helicopter skis.

But they were unable to save Ron and he was captured by Amal, an armed Lebanese militia headed by Nabia Berry.

A year later, the Arad family received letters and a photograph of Ron, confirming that he was alive and held captive by Mustafa Dirani.

In 1988, Dirani severed ties with Amal and formed a new organization.

According to estimates in Israel, Arad was held by Dirani personnel until 1989 and then handed over to Iranian Revolutionary Guards personnel.

A year after Arad's captivity, Adv. Uri Slonim enlisted in the search for him at the request of then-President Haim Herzog. Yitzhak Mordechai, Shaul Mofaz and Benjamin Ben-Eliezer. In this role, played by volunteer, coordinated efforts around Ron Arad.

"today I am not in an official capacity, but in the past, and over the years I was also intelligence efforts and maintaining contact with the family," says Slonim. "throughout Over the years, I have been in contact with Ron's mother, the late Batya, who sadly died of a serious illness during the search for him.

"This is an issue that must not cease to concern the State of Israel, and not us, until we know completely and definitively and not in hypotheses or opinions or intelligence assessments, its fate. This is the uncompromising duty of the state that sent them - the state that sent our sons and grandsons. "Without referring to the practical side of it. I refer to the value and moral duty of 'not to stop with it'. This is our life."

Slonim has written a book on the issue of prisoners and missing persons, "The Mission of the Heart," which is expected to be published in the coming month in the United States.

"Today I'm mostly talking about the issue of value," he explains.

"A concept that is probably a bit dull and faded in our lives, and a pity, and I hope it will return. The value of the Sabbath is who you sent. In this case, the Sabbath of Ron. It is also about absentees from other battles and other wars.

He reiterates that he is not talking about the "practical side" of returning prisoners.

"I go with the value. To me it is the important thing. It is our duty as a state, as a society and as individuals. Not to argue about it and not to talk in terms of what should and should not be. My mind will not rest until we know what Ron's fate is, "To this day. Every name of one of them is important and big to me. My mind will not rest until we answer them all."

"The issue must not cease to occupy the State of Israel."

Over the years, various efforts have been made to return Arad, both of the state but also of citizens, including former intelligence officer and businessman Yaakov Nimrodi, who turned to heads of state and took a huge amount of money out of his pocket to locate every piece of information about him. In one of the efforts, Nimrod pledged $ 1 million in bail for information about Arad.

Today, the efforts are led operationally by the Mossad, with the direct involvement of the head of the Mossad and in collaboration with the National Security Agency and the Shin Bet. The efforts are all concentrated in the Prime Minister's Office by the Coordinator of Prisoners and Missing Persons, who is currently Yaron Blum. Although many years have passed since the disappearance of Ron Arad and the absence of Sultan Yaakov, efforts are continuing while investing a lot of resources.

The chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, MK Ram Ben Barak, who held key positions at the institution, including deputy and deputy head of the Mossad, said that "the Mossad has never spared efforts to find details about Ron Arad, including operations that are not simple.

The inability to reach further details about him at the moment is to some extent an open wound in Israeli intelligence.

To this day, we are investing a lot of effort and I hope that one day we will know more. "
