6 rabbits locked in open-air iron cage suspected of being sold as animals with poor hygiene and water shortage, police detain 60 year old man

The police said that at about 5 pm yesterday (July 3), they received a report stating that some people suspected that the rabbits they raised were being sold in the village house of Puyi Village, Tianguang, Kwudong, and the living environment of the rabbits was poor.

The police said that at about 5:00 pm yesterday (July 3), they received a report stating that some people suspected that the rabbits they raised were being sold in the village house of Puyi Village, Tianguang, Gudong. The living conditions of the rabbits were poor and they were suspected of being treated improperly.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found that there were 6 rabbits on the site, trapped in the iron cage placed in the open air.

Personnel from the Association for the Protection of Animals arrived at the scene to inspect the rabbits, and none of them were life-threatening initially, and were then taken away by the Association for further inspection.


After preliminary investigation, the police arrested a 66-year-old man surnamed Zhao local at the scene on suspicion of "cruelty to animals".

The case is now handed over to the Tai Po District Animal Crime Police Team for investigation.

The arrested persons are being detained for investigation.

The police reiterated that cruelty to animals is a serious crime. According to Article 3 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, Chapter 169 of the Laws of Hong Kong, the maximum penalty for cruelty to animals is a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for three years.

The police appeal to all pet owners to arrange a proper living environment and adequate diet for their pets.
