According to a study, up to 40 percent of training positions remain vacant every year despite the growing shortage of skilled workers.
According to this, in 2021 a good 63,000 training positions or almost twelve percent of all positions could not be filled with young people, reports the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday from a study by the Institute of German Economics (IW).
"But if those jobs are also considered that are not reported to the employment agencies for a variety of reasons, this proportion is significantly higher at almost 40 percent," it says.
According to the institute, the shortage of skilled workers is in part »homemade«.
In the future, it will be important to leverage the potential that still exists among young people in order to combat the shortage of skilled workers, the paper quotes as saying.
Career orientation should draw particular attention to occupations with a high shortage of skilled workers.
In addition, "an even more intensive promotion of mobility, personal care in leisure time and offers for youth housing could help".
Companies are currently desperately looking for candidates before the start of the new training period.
The highest proportion of vacant training positions was in the sale of meat products (60.4 percent) - according to the IW, the number of vacant positions was even greater than the number of training contracts concluded.
The plumbing trade (38.9 percent), the catering trade (37.5 percent) and concrete and reinforced concrete workers (33.8 percent) also suffer from a lack of interest.
