They always said that the Olympic pool in Rome is fast, and tonight (Saturday) we got proof of just how much, after the Romanian David Popovich stunned the world of swimming at the European Championships, breaking one of the old world records - in the 100 meter freestyle.
The 17-year-old Popevich, the world champion in this sport, showed already in the early stages how much he is worth, after setting a new championship record of 47.20 seconds in the qualifiers, and later achieved a new European record in the semi-finals when he touched the wall after 46.98 seconds.
But everyone was waiting for the grand final, where he exploded from the opening and finished with an amazing result of 46.86 seconds, and as mentioned broke the world record, which was held by Cesar Silo with 46.91 seconds - set in the same pool in Rome, at the World Championship in 2009.
The first gold medal this evening was won by Frenchman Yohan Andouille Brewer in the 200 meter backstroke with 1:55.62 minutes.
In the 50m butterfly, Sweden's Sarah Schström came back to smile with the gold after 24.96 seconds.
