An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 was registered this Tuesday in Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, according to reports from the United States Geological Survey (USGS, for its acronym in English).
The shaking was 5.5 km deep so it was felt strong to moderate, according to a CNN team at the scene.
Mayor Santiago Guarderas reported on his Twitter account that security protocols were activated in municipal institutions to "safeguard the integrity of citizens."
The authorities so far have not reported any damage or injuries.
