There are more and more patients in intensive care units in hospitals who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Experts say that the situation is to be expected.
Berlin / Munich - The realization could put a further damper on the already sluggish vaccination campaign in Germany: in August and September, every tenth patient treated for the coronavirus in the intensive care unit was fully vaccinated.
This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of Health to a request from the left-wing member of the Bundestag Sahra Wagenknecht, about which the newspapers of the Funke media group reported.
The current weekly report from the Robert Koch Institute said that 1,186 corona patients were treated in intensive care units from mid-August to mid-September.
A vaccination breakthrough was assumed in 119 of them, which corresponds to 10.03 percent of the cases.
Coronavirus: Breakthrough vaccination is harmless in most cases
Many who are undecided could now ask themselves: Why should I get vaccinated if the corona vaccine does not work one hundred percent anyway? But that would be the wrong idea. Because so-called vaccination breakthroughs - a corona infection with symptoms despite complete vaccination protection - can be expected. Since the availability of the vaccines, it has been said that the vaccine does not provide 100 percent protection against infection either. And a vaccination breakthrough is harmless for the largest number of those affected.
Certain groups of people in particular are particularly susceptible to a serious or fatal course of the disease despite being vaccinated.
Mostly people are affected whose "immune system is weakened by chemotherapy or permanent cortisone treatment, or who are older than 80 years," says the president of the intensive care medicine association DIVI, Gernot Marx.
DIVI President Marx: Vaccinated Corona intensive care patients are usually seriously and chronically ill
Marx gave another reason to the editorial network Germany (RND): The vaccinated minority in the intensive care units consists largely of "older patients whose second vaccination was a long time ago." They also suffer from serious chronic diseases.
Even the RKI, which has been criticized for days for allegedly wrong vaccination quota figures, is not surprised by the increasing number of vaccination breakthroughs.
“It is to be expected that more vaccination breakthroughs will be recorded over time, as more and more people are vaccinated and Sars-CoV-2 is currently spreading again.
This increases the likelihood of coming into contact with the virus as a fully vaccinated person, ”said the newspapers of the Funke media group when asked.
