Gilat Bennett did not internalize this

The prime minister's wife has so far tried to stay away from her husband's new life but her family vacation, at the height of the Omicron panic, is a defiant message towards his policies, undermining his leadership and causing him real harm.

Gilat Bennett's holiday storm has spawned many comparisons and parallels to her predecessor as Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Netanyahu, in the last two days, but it is possible that the more appropriate analogy comes from overseas, from America.

In June 2018, former First Lady Melania Trump caused a major uproar.

At the height of a heated public debate over her husband's immigration policy, the president's wife traveled to visit an immigrant children's center in Texas.

On the back of the jacket she wore, in military green, there was a particularly defiant caption: "I really do not care, and you?".

The "Jacket-Gate" affair soon broke out: commentators and tweeters tried to caption, analyze and understand the hidden message and who it was for, the president stole the slogan and aimed it at his opponents in the Pike News industry, and Melania's media consultant, in an effort to quell the mess. Tweeted that it's just a jacket.

For the same weight, Bennett's current affair is named after Mauritius-Gate, named after the family's original flight destination, which was replaced after the island turned red.

The new destination can not be announced, for security reasons, but it is no less pampering.

This is just a vacation, the individual defense attorneys will argue will defend the move, but the message is the same as Melania's jacket and raises similar questions.

Just five days after the prime minister appeared in front of the cameras and advised Israelis not to travel abroad, his family's vacation defies his own policies and broadcasts "Do we really not care, do you?".

Unlike a thousand thousand differences from Melania, Gilat Bennett is not used to starring in scandals or on the covers of leading fashion magazines. Until now, she has maintained an almost complete distance from her husband's new life, including a total refusal to move to the prime minister's residence in Balfour, so as not to disrupt the lives of their four young children (a decision that costs the state about NIS 15 million). Melania Trump, too, by the way, initially refused to leave New York in favor of the White House, insisting that their young son focus on his studies and not become part of his father's presidency. Back to Bennett - This is the first time she has made headlines since her husband became prime minister. Symbolically, it happened on the very same day that the Prime Minister's Office released a picture of Bennett from his first visit to Balfour. Apparently it was part of the aura in the house.

Last week, Gilat Bennett made her debut as the Prime Minister's wife at an event marking the day of the fight against violence against women in the Knesset.

She opened her remarks with a conscious, and even apologetic, recognition that she would not have gained status if she had not been "the Prime Minister's wife."

Now she is experiencing the other side of the coin: with the rights, come the duties, and most importantly - the responsibilities.

Like Melania Trump, Gilat Bennett did not marry a politician, but a businessman / hitchhiker, and did not choose the White House / Balfour, but for better or worse, a prime minister is not a one-man show and everything she does, says, and yes, also wears - Subject to public scrutiny.

Her decision to travel abroad, even though there was no official instruction not to do so, reveals that she is not internalizing her new situation.

The only good news is that the Bennett family's vacation heralded an initial decline in the Omicron strain in the high windows in Jerusalem and Raanana. Shortly after his family took off for her vacation, the Prime Minister's Office declared the IMF the National Anti-Terrorism Unit and later announced a "not-so-simple" conversation with the US Secretary of State about the nuclear talks in Vienna.

It's just that Mauritius-Gate undermines all of Naftali Bennett's attempts to brand and position himself as a leader.

Beyond the failure of personal example, Bennett causes her husband, who is struggling in the skin of his teeth, to gain legitimacy and support, real damage, and more in the main arena in which he has so far had success.

The affair will hover over any Corona / Omicron directive in the coming weeks, making it difficult for Bennett to mobilize public trust, when he has no trust even inside his home.
