Lia Thomas, an American transgender swimmer, broke two records in the pool last week, competing for the first time in the women's end.

The 22-year-old Thomas, who took part in the college competition, competed in two different events - 1,500 freestyle and 450 freestyle - and not only finished first in both, but also set new records.

Thomas, who before moving on to compete as a woman competed in men's competitions for three years, stopped the clock in the 1,500-meter dash at 15:59:71 minutes (a new American record) and was ahead of her teammate Anna Sophia Klandeza (16:37:44 minutes) by no less than -38 seconds (!).

If that wasn't enough, Thomas also broke another American record in the 450-meter relay, beating Klandez by 14 seconds with 4:34:06 minutes.

The American swimmer, who will need to complete at least a year of testosterone suppression therapy to be part of an official NCAA competition, recently competed as a man in November 2019. "The fact that I am trans does not affect me as an athlete," she said.

"Swimming is a huge part of my life and who I am. I have been swimming since I was 5."

Thomas received much praise for her accomplishments, but there were also those who disliked the fact that Transgender took part in women’s competitions.

"It's not fair," said Linda Blade, an American coach.

"Lia competed for three years as a man, so obviously she will shatter the women's record."
