"Preferably in a face-to-face event": The AfD holds its party conference at the weekend - despite the corona crisis. No problem for chairman Jörg Meuthen.

The number of cases is increasing across the country, and even tougher guidelines will soon apply in the fight against the corona virus.

Nevertheless, the AfD defended its plan to hold a federal party conference with 600 delegates in the middle of the corona pandemic.

"I am convinced that discussions about political content can best be conducted in a face-to-face event," said party chairman Jörg Meuthen of the dpa news agency.

This was also shown by the digital Green Party Congress last weekend.

However, he did not go into detail here.

Meuthen assured that the management of the meeting would strictly ensure that all delegates adhere to the applicable hygiene regulations on distance and mask requirements.

At its two-day party conference in Kalkar, North Rhine-Westphalia, the AfD wants to advise on socio-political issues and a pension concept - two issues on which not much has been written in its party program.

In addition, two positions in the party executive committee have to be filled.

The gathering at the Wunderland exhibition center is to take place on November 28th and 29th.

The AfD wants to appear there with more than 600 delegates.

According to a spokesman, there will be no additional planned number of around 100 guests, but a further 170 seats are planned for media representatives and organizational staff.

Kalbitz's post is to be filled

While the AfD wants to hold its federal party conference despite Corona, the CDU had previously postponed its party conference scheduled for December until next year, as did the Left Party recently.

The Greens, on the other hand, held a digitally designed federal party conference last weekend.

Regular board elections are not pending this time at the AfD.

In Kalkar, however, elections are to be made in two places: For the post of former Federal Executive Board member Andreas Kalbitz, whose party membership was canceled in May by a decision of the Federal Executive Board.

And for the office of Federal Treasurer, which has been provisionally led by Carsten Hütter since January.
