Afghanistan: renewed violence despite the epidemic

An agreement, finally. Obtained by forceps, after long months of political struggles, ego battles and a political crisis that has paralyzed a government already undermined by dissension. President Ashraf Ghani, re-elected after a fraudulent ballot, gave his rival Abdullah Abdullah - who had also declared himself president - the role of chief negotiator in the peace process supposed to take place with the Taliban. The unsuccessful presidential candidate will also be able to choose half of the cabinet members.

So that resolves, for the moment, the political soap opera that rocked the Arg (the presidential palace). On the other hand, although the government asked for a cease-fire in the context of a pandemic and in the middle of Ramadan, the Taliban have multiplied their attacks across the country… So much so that, on Monday, the UN publicly called a reduction in violence, alarmed by the growing number of civilian victims since the beginning of April.
