After 20 years: The gorillas arrive on Netflix Israel today

2021-11-28T13:24:11.790Z

The band, which began as a side project of the Blair lead singer, and over the years has become a beloved, influential and appreciated band in its own right, will appear in a full-length film from Netflix

After 20 years it's finally happening: The Gorillas, the ensemble with the illustrated (and very cool) avatars of Damon Albern, will star in the full-length film, which is currently in the writing stages.

During an interview with Apple Music, the British musician revealed that he and his cartoon band will be producing the film in collaboration with Netflix.

"I'm in Los Angeles right now because we're making a full-length movie together with Netflix," he said.

"We have a writing session in Malibu this afternoon."

Albern said he was very excited about the project and that "it's something we've wanted to do for a very long time. (The project) has been through so many versions, this story of gorillas making a movie, to be honest."

According to the singer, this is not the first time the gorillas are researching the possibility of producing a film or TV project.

In 2017, Albern's friend and co-creator, Jamie Howell, said that a ten-episode illustrated series was in the production stages, but now it can be concluded that the project in question has been dropped from the episode.

Howell said in the past that a full-length motion picture was already in the works with DreamWorks, but that project was later canceled because it "was too dark to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on."

As for choosing Netflix as a partner in the project, Damon said, "Netflix ... I do not know. Beyond the fact that they're pretty much running LA now, it just feels like they're a good creative team."

For two decades the gorillas have been considered one of the most important and groundbreaking ensembles in pop, hip-hop, and electronic and alternative music.

What began as a side band of Albern, who until then was best known as the lead singer of the band Britpop Blair, became within a few years a beloved and esteemed band, using familiar characters and advanced technology to spread his gospel and work.

The gorillas, meaning the cartoon characters standing in front of the band's stage, are D-2, Murdoch, Noodle and Russell.

Their voices on the albums are given to them by Albern, Phil Cornwall, Rami Kabka and various guest musicians.

Alongside their albums, the iconic gorillas characters also star on shirts, hats and a variety of merchandise items.

In addition, their vinyl figures are considered popular in the homes of many music lovers.

No further details about the project are known at this time.
