Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has called on the future federal government to take drastic measures to break the fourth corona wave.
"Unfortunately, we have to shut down the whole country even more to protect our health system," he told the Augsburger Allgemeine.
The Leopoldina's warnings are a wake-up call: Now there is a need for consistent contact restrictions for unvaccinated people, a lockdown for hotspot regions, masks in all schools and football games without spectators, Söder said.
“Every day of waiting and hesitation is a wasted day.
The whole of Germany is headed for an emergency, the coming federal government can no longer stand idly by. "
The National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina had recommended immediate, comprehensive contact restrictions in view of the sharply increasing number of infections.
"A federal emergency brake has to be decided this week," demanded the CSU boss.
"We need uniform corona management for all of Germany again and not a patchwork quilt," Söder said.
"That is why we need a Prime Minister's Conference as soon as possible and a new law that does justice to the dramatic situation - and finally the new Federal Minister of Health."
Nobody can currently estimate how the new Omikron variant will work.
Now all flights from South Africa would have to be stopped, so Söder: “In addition, more vaccine is needed for the countries, extensive compensation for the economy like last year and a compulsory vaccination for everyone from January.
This is an emergency package for Germany. "
