Munich – long jump world champion Malaika Mihambo has lost her European title.

After her triumph at the World Cup in Eugene in July, Mihambo was infected with Corona and only last week gave the green light to start at the European Championships in Munich.
Despite her COVID-19 illness, she was considered the top favorite for EM gold.
After all, the 28-year-old had been unbeaten at major outdoor events since her 2018 European Championship triumph in Berlin.
"Unfortunately, luck was a bit lacking," said the Heidelberger at the stadium microphone.
Nevertheless, second place is a reason “to celebrate.
Thank you Munich.”

For the first time since the beginning of athletics, it had poured heavily in the evening in the Olympic Stadium in Oberwiesenfeld. The heavy rain then eased off, but an unpleasant and changing wind blew.
Mihambo didn't get along with it that well, her rhythm in the run-up didn't allow for a counterattack anymore.
Not even in “her” last attempt, in which she had already won many competitions.
The second German starter Merle Homeier (Göttingen) took ninth place with 6.42 m.
Mikaelle Assani (Karlsruhe/6.46) and Maryse Luzolo (Königstein/6.28) were eliminated in the qualification.
