Alain Godard: "Europe can set up around fifteen large venture capital funds"

The boss of the European Investment Fund calls on companies to get out of debt. He welcomes the development of private equity.


Created in 1994, the European Investment Fund is part of the EIB.

It financially supports European SMEs by offering guarantees and co-financing private equity companies.

It has been particularly mobilized since the start of the crisis.

Thanks to massive national and European support, companies and in particular European SMEs are weathering the crisis fairly well.

The level of defaulted loans has never soared and has even tended to decline in recent months.

In terms of activity, we are witnessing a real catching-up.

The economic support plans put in place in the various European countries have clearly been effective and I am delighted.

There is, however, a downside: the sharp rise in corporate debt.

The debt ratio fell from 58% to 64% of GDP on average in the euro zone during this crisis with strong disparities between a country ...
