Algeria: the ruling party won the legislative elections

The party in power in Algeria, the National Liberation Front (FLN), won the legislative elections organized on Saturday, in a context of historically strong abstention and political crisis, announced Tuesday the National Independent Election Authority (ANIE).

His victory is a surprise because the FLN was considered moribund, due to its compromise with the deposed President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, forced to resign in 2019 by an unprecedented protest movement, even if the party benefits from an old and extensive establishment. .

The FLN leads with 105 out of 407 seats, followed by independent candidates with 78 seats.

The main Islamist formation in the country, the Mouvement de la société pour la paix (MSP), which claimed victory after the election, comes third with 64 seats, Mohamed Chorfi, president of ANIE told reporters. .

The former sole party and the main party in the outgoing Parliament, the FLN nevertheless recorded a significant decline in the number of seats, according to the first provisional official figures.

A first provisional participation rate of 30.20%

It loses more than 50 seats and controls a quarter of the elected members of the new assembly.

The National Democratic Rally (RND), with which the FLN has traditionally allied, won 57 seats (14%).
