Did aliens visit Saudi Arabia thousands of years ago?
This is the question asked by anyone who sees the huge rock cut in two in a remarkably symmetrical and precise way, as if it were the work of a laser beam.
This rare spectacle has sparked a slew of online speculations, with people exposed to it claiming that the cut is so precise and too smooth to be created by natural factors.
The rock is an eight-hour drive from Riyadh and can only be reached by car.
It is called "El Nasela" and has become a sought-after item among tourists where people come to be photographed next to it.
It is located in the oasis of Tima in northwestern Saudi Arabia, is about 9 meters high and 7.6 meters wide.
It is estimated to be about 4,000 years old and has a petroglyph of what looks like a human and a horse.

Reddit has started a debate about the cut in the rock, when some surfers are convinced that due to its great accuracy and smoothness of the cut, those responsible for it are aliens.

Alien theorists even hypothesized that the cut in the rock was caused when an alien aimed its laser beam at a random spot on Earth, hit the rock and cut it in two.
Others estimated that it was a work of an ancient alien culture that lived in the area and had advanced technology - and mentioned the pyramids in Giza that they said were built using the same technology.
Others have argued that it may be the result of human slavery with a saw and a great deal of free time.
But geologist Sherry Lewis tried to cool the enthusiasm and explained that it was nature that made the cut. Lewis, who is an honorary research fellow at the University of Bristol, agreed it was an "extraordinary sight" but said the rock split could be due to a process called "freeze-thaw", which occurs when water enters a small crack in the rock and when temperatures drop The water freezes and expands - causing the crack to expand and lengthen. As the ice melts, the water makes its way deeper and deeper into the crack. This process repeats itself for thousands, even millions of years until the rock eventually splits. In a desert environment, he can also explain why the rock stands on its own. "
While weathering and erosion may be the cause of the rock cut, Lewis agrees that there may be truth in the theory that the rock was carefully cut by humans. She says: "Given that past civilizations have created Stonehenge and the Easter Island sculptures with the most basic tools - the possibility that it is man-made cannot be ruled out."
So what's her verdict? "At first glance the crack looks man-made, and so does the very smooth front surface, but I saw a picture showing a parallel crack in the back of the rock, so maybe it's still a result of a natural process."
Geologist and geophysicist Professor Tim Reston of the University of Birmingham also shared his thoughts on the strange sight, saying the rock split is "probably a natural rock fracture usually caused by release and expansion of stress, created when the bedrock was more continuous and now exposed to nature erosion".
Archaeological excavations in the area have revealed flint rocks dating to the fourth millennium BCE.
