Alpes-Maritimes: the Cannes Mandelieu golf course will soon water all its lawns with treated wastewater

2022-10-06T16:45:31.327Z

Thanks to this unprecedented solution, the “Old Course” golf course should preserve 230,000 m3 of water per year.

The project has been on the table for almost ten years.

The latest episodes of drought and high heat in the Alpes-Maritimes have undoubtedly accelerated things.

In fact, from June 2023, all of the lawns of the “Old Course” golf course in Cannes-Mandelieu – i.e. 74 hectares – will be watered with treated wastewater,

Le Figaro learned on Thursday.

“This project, favorably received by all the professionals in the sector, is now possible thanks to the efficient system of membrane filters used by the Aquaviva wastewater treatment plant in Cannes-Mandelieu,

indicates the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration.

The treated water is thus of very good quality and is compatible with agricultural irrigation use.

A significant feat for the future.”

This station, which treats some 18 million m3 of water per year, now discharges most of it into the sea. A loss and a monumental ecological mess.

Part of this water will therefore be brought directly to the golf course, which is located, moreover, very close to the Aquaviva station.

“To put it simply, it's just a pipe to pull

,” explains Fabien Pigalle, in charge of communication for the “Old Course” golf course.

A solution that has multiple advantages: a greener golf course all year round, less fertilizer costs and significant financial gains.

“Serving the general interest”

To accommodate this treated water but rich in micro-organisms, the Cannes-Mandelieu golf course recently replaced all its lawns with a new variety of grass

"more resistant to heat and disease, less energy-intensive in water"

, specifies Jean- Stéphane Camerini, owner of the “Old Course” golf course.

The latter also hopes that this initiative will

“emphasize the virtuous circle of golf activity on the environment”

.

It is

"important"

, he adds, "

to seek all possible energy savings."

In addition, the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration, which is very involved in the project to reuse treated wastewater, would like it to be collected for other uses, such as cleaning public spaces or watering public spaces. greens.

“The city of Mandelieu has always assumed its share of responsibility in the face of an unprecedented climate crisis which is rewriting the way we consume energy and use water resources.

This project carried out on this exceptional site places our territory at the forefront of innovation, serving the general interest"

, continues Sébastien Leroy, vice-president of the Cannes Lérins agglomeration and mayor of Mandelieu-la- Napoule.
