The first tropical storm of the 2021 eastern Pacific hurricane season formed on Sunday off the southwest coast of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Andrés is the earliest to form in the eastern Pacific 'satellite era' records, surpassing Adrián in 2017.

In addition, the Andres meteorological phenomenon also has the distinction of developing before the official start of the eastern Pacific hurricane season, which begins on May 15.

It is not the first time that a tropical system has developed before the official start of the hurricane season.

In three of the past five years, a tropical depression or tropical storm has formed in the eastern Pacific before the official season.

This system began to form on Friday, and has since strengthened into a tropical storm.

Andrés currently has sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and is heading northwest at nearly 10 miles per hour.

"Increased wind shear from southwest to west and drier air west of the cyclone should prevent any significant additional strengthening," the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Sunday.

The system is expected to maintain its tropical storm strength through Monday morning.

Then, a gradual weakening of the storm is forecast to begin and the system to turn into a remnant low on Tuesday as it traverses the waters of the eastern Pacific.

Hurricane season starts early

The Pacific is not the only ocean basin that has experienced preseason tropical activity in recent years.

For the past six years, the Atlantic has also named at least one form of tropical system before the official start of the season, on June 1.

Another above-average Atlantic hurricane season is expected this year.

That is why the National Hurricane Center has decided that starting this year it will issue its routine “tropical climate forecast” exercise beginning May 15, in order to better serve communities affected by early tropical systems. seasonal.

Regardless of which ocean basin you live in, it only takes one storm to make the season impactful.

Therefore, it is crucial to start preparing for the hurricane season.

That can be done by reviewing your evacuation plans and making sure your supply kit is up to date.

Some of the areas that were severely affected in 2020 may still be recovering, and some roads or bridges could also remain under repair.

"You can also make a list of items to replenish emergency hurricane supplies and start thinking about how you will prepare your home for the upcoming hurricane season," said the hurricane center.

It only takes one storm to change your life and community.

If you live in an area prone to tropical cyclones, you need to be prepared.
