Another strategic outpost: Russia will establish a naval base in Sudan on the shores of the Red Sea
Moscow continues to expand its global footprint, and will supply the bow with military weapons and equipment in exchange for the facility in Port Sudan.
The duration of the agreement will be for at least a quarter of a century, with the possibility of extending it to ten years at a time.

Russia has signed an agreement with Sudan to establish a naval base in the country for at least a quarter of a century, as part of Moscow's efforts to expand its global foothold.
The agreement, published today (Tuesday) on the official website of government documents, allows Russia to simultaneously hold up to four battleships, including those with nuclear propulsion, in Port Sudan on the shores of the Red Sea.
The duration of the agreement is 25 years, and it can be automatically extended for periods of ten years if neither party objects.
The document states that the Russian naval base is supposed to "help strengthen peace and stability in the region" and is not directed towards any third party.
In exchange for the establishment of the base, Russia will supply Sudan with weapons and military equipment.
Sudan has been in a period of transition since dictator Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in a popular-backed military coup a year and a half ago.
Khartoum has since tried to get closer to Washington and Sudan has even been removed from the list of pro-terrorism countries in exchange for its agreement to open normalization with Israel, but in recent days it has been reported that contacts are in jeopardy due to Sudan's demand to protect it.

Russia's military presence in the world and on major shipping lanes waned after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 due to economic crises and a lack of military funding, but President Vladimir Putin has invested much effort in rebuilding the country's military in the face of tensions with the West.
The Russian navy already has a significant presence in the Mediterranean, thanks to a naval base in the port of Tartus in Syria.
It is the only base on which Russia holds beyond its borders that does not reside in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Russia intervened in the war in Syria in September 2015, helping President Bashar Assad regain control of most of the country in a brutal civil war.
In 2017, Moscow agreed with Assad to extend the base lease on Tartus for 49 years.
Russia can now hold up to 11 warships in the port, and it has begun upgrading and expanding it.
In recent years, Putin has returned to the Soviet custom of maintaining a constant rotation of battleships in the Mediterranean.
