A German security guard was arrested today (Wednesday), after he raised his hand in front of a group of Israeli athletes who visited the memorial to the massacre at the Munich Olympics in 1972, the police said.
The 16 athletes from the Israeli team in the European Championships visited the Olympic Park in Munich last night when the forbidden straight arm gesture was performed.
"One of the four security guards present at the scene was seen making a National Socialist gesture," the statement said.
The delegation that visited the monument were the members of the kayaking team that will start competing tomorrow.
The police immediately arrested the suspect, a 19-year-old man from Berlin, and he was removed from all other championship events.
According to them, the athletes themselves did not notice the gesture.
The arrest comes at a sensitive time, when Munich is hosting the European Championships ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Olympic massacre, in which 11 Israelis were murdered.
The families of the dead received 4.5 million euros ($4.6 million) in compensation, but say it is not enough and say they will boycott the ceremony next month.
