The annual conference is a joint event of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, the Society for Archeology in Bavaria and the City of Mindelheim. The joy of archeology fans is now likely to be overshadowed by the sudden death of a keynote speaker and important archaeologist, Prof. Dr. C. Sebastian Sommer.

Actually, Prof. Dr.

Summer together with Mindelheim's First Mayor Dr.

Stephan Winter and Prof. Dr.

Bernd Päffgen should open the conference at 1.30 p.m.

But as has now become known, Prof. Dr.

Summer on October 12th as a result of a serious illness diagnosed in spring.

The fact that Professor Sommer's death came so suddenly also shook his colleague: "We are deeply affected," said medieval archaeologist Prof. Dr.

Päffgen towards the weekly COURIER.

Professor Dr.

C. Sebastian Sommer was one of the most renowned Roman provincial archaeologists and state archaeologist of Bavaria.

Provincial Roman archaeologists deal with the material legacies of the Romans, regional archaeologists are appointed by the monument offices of the respective federal states.

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation also regrets the death of its valued colleague very much.

"C.

Sebastian Sommer's name will always be associated with the Bavarian Monument Preservation.

His death stunned us.

We will miss him and his life-affirming manner very much, "says Conservator General Prof. Dipl.-Ing.

Mathias Pfeil, head of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, who recently declared Mindelburg a “monument of national importance” (the Wochen KURIER reported).

After all, according to the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, one of Prof. Dr.

Sommer's greatest professional wishes come true in his last year of work: The World Heritage Committee named the Danube Limes a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

To a large extent this is thanks to the state curator Prof. Dr.

C. Sebastian Sommer, says his obituary by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.

Sommer played a leading role in formulating the application and worked tirelessly for this goal for many years with never-ending enthusiasm and a lot of passion.

Archeology conference in Mindelheim is still taking place

According to the office of the Society for Archeology, the event will take place despite the tragic loss.

When asked by Wochen KURIERS, the city of Mindelheim also confirmed that the original schedule would be adhered to.

Instead of the deceased, the main curator of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, Dr.

Jochen Haberstroh, who was already Sommer's representative, opened with the keynote speakers.
