With its black and red kernels hanging on the trees, it bears cherry fruits for farmers who continue to harvest them for the current season in As-Suwayda Governorate, in the hope of abundant production that will provide them with a source of income to help them meet the burdens and requirements of life.

Cherries are harvested from farmers and workshops within orchards scattered in many locations in As-Suwayda Governorate, the most important of which are Dahr al-Jabal, Miamas, Qanawat and Mafa’ila, according to the stakeholders in the Directorate of Agriculture.

According to the farmer Diab Kiwan from the village of Miamas, 20 trees in his orchard in the village of Miamas brought him an income of two million and 500 thousand pounds, indicating that there is comfort with cherry trees because they do not require many agricultural transactions and farmers benefit from it directly after the completion of the winter and spring seasons compared to apple trees Which farmers are late to take advantage of.

In the Al-Jamh area in Dahr El-Jabal, the farmer Ghazi Alam El-Din, after completing the harvest of his season for this year, expressed his satisfaction with the cultivation of cherry trees, which do not require many costs, especially with the cultivation of good varieties during the past years, which he finds in the fruits of a distinctive color and taste popular with many.

During her interview with SANA’s reporter, the head of a cherry picking workshop, Safaa Awad Al-Omar, indicated that she works with a workshop annually in harvesting cherries during June, and the workshop provides daily between 12 to 15 job opportunities with wages of up to six thousand pounds per day, indicating that the load for this season varies between orchards and trees with The presence of productive trees, one of which is large and reaches 25 boxes.

The cherry season for this year is rather good, as mentioned by the so-called guarantee, Ayham Khudair, who used to work in this field twenty years ago and bring workers to pick the crop and market it to the Al-Hal market in Damascus, despite the difficulties represented, the most important of which is the high transportation wages and the payment of harvest wages to workers, which range between 100 and 150 pounds per kilo Noting that the prices are related to the quality of cherries, and some of the good ones range between 2000 and 2500 pounds per kilo.

According to engineer Dalia Amer of the extension unit of Dahr al-Jabal, which specializes in cherries, the cherry tree is one of the trees adapted to the prevailing environmental conditions in As-Suwayda Governorate. It is usually planted with rainfly within apple fields. The total cultivated area is 3320 dunums containing 103 thousand trees, of which the fruit is about 83 thousand trees.

Production estimates for the current season, according to Amer, amount to about 920 tons, indicating that production during the past four years ranged between 800 and 1500 tons, depending on the conditions of each season.

Engineer Amer pointed out that the cherry product is clean and free of pesticides, and its trees do not need to be controlled, but only need some agricultural operations such as plowing, pruning and fertilization, indicating that the most important of its varieties is the Italian solid “ping” for marketing, crystal and rainbow manufacturing purposes.
