At least 8 cyclists are hit by a vehicle in Arizona

The driver fled after the accident and the police chased him to a gas station where he was hit by a bullet. Four of the cyclists are in a hospital in critical condition, according to police.


At least 8 cyclists were injured after being hit by a driver while racing in Show Low, Arizona, this Saturday morning.

The suspect fled and was shot and wounded by police after a chase, according to authorities.

Six of the cyclists were taken to a hospital by medical district personnel, four were in critical condition and two remained "critical but stable," according to police.

One of them was flown to a health center.

The other two victims arrived at the hospital on their own and are stable, according to authorities.

The athletes participated in a 58-mile (93-kilometer) race called Bike the Bluff.

Show Low police explained that a heavy-duty black Ford F-150 model vehicle struck several cyclists around 7:30 am (local time).

Following the accident, the 35-year-old driver sped off the scene

, according to authorities.

Officers chased the suspect until they reached a hardware store, where an officer shot him, according to officers.

The driver was also taken to hospital and is "critical but stable."

"Our community is shocked by this incident and our hearts and prayers go out to the injured and their families," the Show Low Police Department said in a statement.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety will be in charge of investigating the shooting, according to Show Low police.
