Two other Azzurri are aiming for the quarterfinals: Lorenzo Sonego beat the Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles in two sets and will now challenge the young Dane Holger Rune.
Jannik Sinner, winner of the last two editions of the tournament, will make his debut on Thursday against the Portuguese Nuno Borges.
