For the second year in a row, bank charges increased little or not at all. Good news as inflation picks up.

This is good news for bank customers.

While inflation is picking up, bank tariffs remained stable in 2021, after a moderate increase in 2020, notes the annual study by the Observatory of Bank Tariffs (OTB), depending on the Advisory Committee of the Financial Sector (CCSF).

"This conclusion concerns an economic sector characterized by strong competition between the players present on this market with varied offers that can be adapted to the needs of each client"

, welcomes the French Banking Federation (FBF).

“Six tariff lines are stable or almost stable, seven are up, but they vary from 1 to 42 euro cents, and one line is down 9 cents (it concerns the subscription to products offering alerts on the situation of the account by SMS) ”

, notes the Observatory which peeled the price brochures of a panel of banks, representing 98.8% of market share. Among the increases, we note that the average price invoiced for the maintenance of the account thus increased from 18.97 euros per year at the end of 2020 to 19.32 euros on January 5, 2021, the date on which the establishments had published their last price lists. for the rest of the year, noted the observatory. The annual subscription for an international deferred debit card has increased from 41.78 euros on average to 42.20 euros.

Lower bank incident costs in three years

This trend is also valid for the costs of banking incidents which had increased significantly in the past.

"Here again, we do not see any notable change

,

" said

the study.

“On the other hand, over the last three years, between December 31, 2018 and January 5, 2021, there have been slight decreases for eleven tariff lines out of sixteen,” she

explains.

Overall, we have to go back to 2019, with a drop in almost all prices, to find a significant change.

It then followed the crisis of yellow vests and the commitment of banks to freeze their prices, at the request of the Elysee.

Especially since between 2013 and 2017, the household banking budget had swelled by 11% according to the consumer association CLCV.

The observatory notes, however, that in 2021, overseas territories are worse off than in mainland France with eight weighted average tariffs out of 17 increasing in overseas territories using the euro.

Account maintenance fees rose by 12.3%, or 2.43 euros, and the international payment card with immediate debit by 1.9%, or 81 cents.
