Will French listed banks once again be able to pay dividends to their shareholders?
The governor of the Banque de France, François Villeroy de Galhau, for the first time pleaded in this direction on Friday.
In March, the European Central Bank (ECB) asked these groups, on the one hand, not to pay dividends for the 2019 results, and on the other hand, not to buy back their shares.
Objective: to preserve their financial strength and support the economy.
In December, the Frankfurt Institution is due to decide on possible dividends for the results for 2020.
"Undoubtedly, the setting aside of all the results in 2020 was an effective measure to support the solvency of financial institutions,"
said François Villeroy de Galhau.
However, two arguments now plead in favor of a cautious opening towards a distribution, the modalities of which will have to be discussed. ”
