Four games in a row he was unsuccessful, on Tuesday it worked: Aaron Judge from the New York Yankees hit the 62nd home run of the season. In doing so, he broke an age-old record. A fan could get pretty rich right now.

Baseball star Aaron Judge hit his 62nd home run of the season in Major League Baseball (MLB), breaking an American League record that had lasted 61 years.

The New York Yankees pro surpassed club legend Roger Maris, who set the old record in 1961.

Judge, who drew level with Maris last week, scored the decisive goal on Tuesday evening in the first inning of the game at the Texas Rangers (5-4).

The 30-year-old had previously gone empty-handed in four games in a row for the record champions.

"It's a great relief," said Judge, who received a standing ovation at the stadium.

The ball is valuable

After the hit, a fan caught the ball in the stands.

Judge contemplates getting him: "It would have been great to get him back, but this is a souvenir for a fan. Let's see what happens."

The secret star of the evening was the fan who secured the ball.

His name is Cory Youmans and according to the Guardian he works in finance.

The ball could reportedly be worth around $2 million.

The most expensive home run baseball ever cost three million dollars in 1999.

It was the ball Mark McGwire had hit for his 70th home run the year before, a National League record at the time, in which McGwire played for the St. Louis Cardinals.

After catching the judge's ball, Cory Youmans was filmed by a TV crew going out during the game to have the ball authenticated.

He was accompanied by security staff.

He does not yet know what he will do with the ball.

"I haven't thought about that."

Only three players have hit more home runs than Judge in an MLB season: Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa - all of whom have been accused of using steroids.

That's why Roger Maris Jr., son of the previous record holder, celebrated Judge on Twitter as the "clean home run king".

Bonds holds the official MLB record (73).
