Beijing Olympics 2022: three foreign athletes in quarantine after a positive Covid-19 test

These three athletes were participating in test events before the Winter Olympics, which begin in February.

They have been isolated to prevent further contamination.

Three foreign athletes participating in test events ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics have been quarantined after testing positive, Chinese authorities said on Thursday.

One of them, a toboggan or a toboggan, tested positive on arrival at the airport in early November, the organizing committee said last week.

Another member of his team then found himself in the same situation.

Asymptomatic, the two athletes were placed in a quarantine hotel and were not hospitalized.

Their country of origin has not been revealed.

2,000 people around test events on the sites

A third person has in turn been placed in solitary confinement, an official of the organizing committee, Zhao Weidong, announced Thursday.

He is also a member of a toboggan team and a close contact with the previous two.

Without waiting for the start of the competition, which will take place from February 4 to February 20, some 2,000 foreigners, athletes and support staff, have been participating since last month in test events at venues planned for the Games.

China, where the epidemic appeared at the end of 2019, has virtually eradicated the contagion by resorting to radical measures.

Despite a few sporadic outbreaks, the official total announced this Thursday relates to 35 new contaminations nationwide.

As the Olympic Games approach, the country has however further increased its preventive measures.

Athletes in a bubble and tested daily

Foreign athletes must have been vaccinated before entering China or undergo a three-week quarantine.

All will be screened daily and will not be able to leave a health bubble including the Olympic village and the event sites.

The authorities continue to "screen people, equipment and the environment," Zhao Wheidong said.

The city of Beijing on Wednesday imposed new restrictions on anyone arriving in the capital, requiring a Covid test of less than 48 hours regardless of the place of origin of the traveler.

Flights from the rest of the country have also been drastically reduced.

International flights have already been reduced to the bare minimum since March 2020.
