High columns of black smoke and flames are seen rising in the skies of the Lebanese capital as shown by the videos circulating on social networks.
The fire involved a warehouse where car tires and motor oil are stored, the Lebanese military said in a statement.
Thick columns of black smoke are visible from several districts of the capital where panic was immediately sown among the Lebanese still in shock from the deadly explosions that traumatized the capital five weeks ago.
"There are no risks of explosions at the port of Beirut," said the director of the same port, Bassem Qaysi, commenting on the news of the vast fire in the Duty Free area of the port of the Lebanese capital. The port director confirmed that the flames spread inside a depot containing barrels of industrial oil and that the fire then spread to the nearby tire depot. Qaysi also said fire-fighting operations focus on the Charles Helou Boulevard bus and taxi terminal area, bordering the port.
