The head of Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, vacates his post early.

Lütke Daldrup asked the supervisory board to terminate his contract in September of this year, the airport announced on Wednesday morning.

With the completion and commissioning of BER and the submission of the new business plan 2021, he had "fulfilled his task," the letter on Tuesday said.

Lütke Daldrup has been the airport manager since March 2017, according to media reports, his contract would have run until 2022.

With the completion of the 65th year of age it is now "time to clear the way for a new and qualified management team," the airport quoted the outgoing chairman of the management.

The chairman of the supervisory board, Rainer Bretschneider, thanked Lütke Daldrup for his work, who had "taken on great responsibility in a very difficult time".

The commissioning of BER was "largely due to his work".

In its meeting on Friday, the supervisory board wants to deal with the personnel.

Initially, nothing was known about a possible successor.

The capital's airport BER opened at the beginning of November 2020 with a delay of nine years.

Berlin Tegel Airport officially closed a few days later.
