Berlin Airport reports "largely smooth" return traffic

The feared chaos has not materialized: The capital city airport BER reports an orderly handling at the end of the holiday despite the high number of passengers. Unlike at the beginning of the autumn break, this time provisions were made.

Not only the travelers, but also those responsible at the major airport BER should breathe a sigh of relief.

In contrast to the beginning of the holiday, there have been hardly any problems with return traffic at Berlin's capital city airport this weekend.

"It is largely running smoothly," said a BER spokeswoman on Saturday afternoon.

There are no excessively long waiting times.

The airport expected around 190,000 passengers for the three days between Friday and Sunday, the last holiday weekend in Berlin and Brandenburg, among other places.

It's one of the busiest weekends since the pandemic broke out.

The airport reported similarly high passenger numbers at the start of the holiday on the weekend of October 9th and 10th.

However, such figures are still a long way from pre-crisis levels.

Around two weeks ago, however, there were sometimes chaotic scenes at the airport.

Lufthansa had at times asked its passengers to be at the airport four hours before departure.

Long queues formed in front of the check-in counters, some missed their plane despite sufficient lead time.

On the tarmac, arriving travelers had to wait for exit stairs and later for their luggage.

The reasons given were the more complex controls in the corona crisis and personnel bottlenecks.

Many employees are still on short-time work or have left the industry entirely; they are now missing important positions.

According to its own information, BER has therefore positioned itself differently this weekend and, among other things, supports the airlines with their own staff in the terminal.

There, the employees are available to travelers as contact persons for questions and problems.

In addition, capacities from other ground service providers were booked on the apron.

At the beginning of the holiday, travelers also vented their displeasure with the chaos at BER via Twitter.

But this weekend there were hardly any complaints on social networks either.

Other major airports, for example in Munich, are also calling on passengers to plan more time at check-in in view of the vacation times.

In Bavaria, the week-long autumn holidays start on October 30th.
