Bernie Sanders: US Democrat memes go viral after Joe Biden's inauguration

2021-01-21T20:10:28.039Z

The Democrat Bernie Sanders actually played no role in Joe Biden's swearing-in ceremony. But one day after his inauguration, images of the left-wing democrat are still being celebrated online.

Practical winter jacket and eye-catching knitted gloves: Somehow Bernie Sanders did not want to fit into the setting of the inauguration of US President Joe Biden.

The left-wing Senator from Vermont was actually only invited as a guest, a major appearance was not planned.

But one day after the ceremony, Sanders is still dominating social media - worldwide.

Fans of the Democrats mounted the image of the apparently slightly shivering politician in various environments.

The short message service Twitter recently reported more than 64,000 tweets for the hashtag #BernieSanders.

In the meantime there is apparently even its own app, with which Sanders can be dropped off at any address on the Google Maps map service.

Among the numerous contributions created so far, a video collage with music that shows Sanders in a subway went viral.

The cut out picture of Sanders was also inserted into historical recordings.

On this from CNN presenter Jake Tapper, Sanders joins the representatives of the victorious powers after the Second World War, the British Winston Churchill, the US President Franklin Roosevelt and the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

While some users placed the Democrat in iconic movie scenes, others let him participate in the first moon landing afterwards.

The 79-year-old Senator also blends in surprisingly well with the iconic photo »Lunch break on a skyscraper«, which shows a group of construction workers during the construction of the Rockefeller Center in New York.

The media had described the choice of clothes - paired with Sanders' sitting posture with folded arms - as "grumpy chic" ("lousy style").

German websites are also now jumping on the trend, including the Bundesliga soccer team Mainz 05.

Or the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, which is currently unable to receive spectators due to the corona pandemic.

It's not the first time that Sanders has caused a stir with his outfit.

The knitted gloves achieved fame about a year ago at an appearance by the politician, who at the time was still running as a candidate in the Democratic primary against eventual winner Joe Biden.

Made from recycled sweaters and old plastic bottles, as reported in the Los Angeles Times, the hand warmers even managed to get their own Twitter account.
