In the corona crisis, Jeff Bezos' online group Amazon tripled its profit. Now the richest man in the world is once again turning shares in the company into money on a larger scale - which he could use for his space plans.

After Jeff Bezos surprisingly announced his departure from Amazon a few weeks ago, the 57-year-old sold billions in company shares again this week.

According to reports from the Securities and Exchange Commission, he sold nearly two billion dollars worth of paper.

Bezos had already monetized Amazon shares on a large scale several times in the recent past.

In 2020 alone, Bezos SEC data had already sold more than ten billion dollars in Amazon shares.

Blue Origin's first manned all-flight planned for July

The exact reasons for the current sale are unclear. In the past, however, he had already announced that he would invest billions in his rocket start-up Blue Origin every year. With Blue Origin, Bezos is competing with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and his SpaceX space project, and for that he will have to invest heavily. Blue Origin announced this week that it will launch humans into space for the first time in July - and is currently auctioning a free space. Most recently, however, the company was unsuccessful in a NASA tender to bring Americans back to the moon.

Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 and is still the largest single shareholder of the world's largest internet retailer.

Amazon's business is doing exceptionally well, especially in the corona crisis.

The mail order company was able to more than triple its quarterly profit - to 8.1 billion dollars after 2.5 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2020. Amazon recently had a market value of 1.65 trillion dollars.

With an estimated fortune of over $ 190 billion, Bezos is the richest person in the world, according to Forbes.

However, Bezos wants to give up the CEO position at Amazon in the third quarter and then become the Group's managing director.

He also plans to invest billions in coping with the consequences of climate change.

Blue Origin was founded by Bezos around 20 years ago.

In mid-April, the company last tested its rocket called the New Shepard with an astronaut capsule.

It reached an altitude of around 105 kilometers before returning to Earth.

For the first time, employees of the company also rehearsed some astronaut tasks before take-off and after landing.

The actual test flight, however, remained unmanned - the New Shepard has never flown with people on board.
