US President Joe Biden announced today (Wednesday) that he intends to withdraw the remnants of US forces from Afghanistan by September 11.
"It's time to end America's longest war. It's time for American troops to return home," Biden said, noting that the 2,500 troops remaining in the country would begin their withdrawal on May 1.
"The United States will begin its final withdrawal on May 1 this year. It will not withdraw hastily," Biden said at a White House news conference.
"We will do this responsibly, deliberately and safely, and we will do so in full coordination with our allies and partners, who now have more forces in Afghanistan than we do."
Biden added that he had spoken with former President George W. Bush about his decision.
