How do you manage to propel a three-digit number of ships, keep masses of satisfied workers, maintain a fruitful relationship with customers and continue to place the planet, with its many challenges, of paramount importance? ZIM executives, one of the top ten global shipping companies, provide a fascinating look at the issue of social responsibility (ESG) and anticipate that this is just the beginning of the process and the future will be much more rosy, and green.

"We are a global shipping company, and a green company. Our ships carry official certificates and meet measurable criteria," says Dudu Arbel, senior vice president of global operations at ZIM, who is also responsible for sustainability issues at the company, including corporate responsibility. "Sustainability is one of the company's five core values. , Out of a simple overarching goal - to continue to operate as a green society. "

Arbel also explains the environmental challenges of the shipping world and the ways to overcome them, such as the use of low-sulfur fuel and sophisticated technological systems, the development of engines with green capabilities and the use of liquefied petroleum gas as fuel for ships. He clarifies that ZIM fully meets the global environmental requirements, and does even more than that. According to him, the IMO, the UN's super-organization, which is in fact the super-regulator of the shipping world, aims to reduce the level of pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and today - ZIM is the market leader: "Our future ships, which are currently under construction, will be powered by natural gas ( LNG) and thus reduce by about 25% CO2 emissions. This is the vision and these are our values. "

Arbel says that these moves are in line with the perceptions of the company's customers, and that meeting the goals contributes to ZIM in a very significant way and creates for it a highly competitive market advantage:" We are at the top of global shipping companies.

Shai Levy, Director of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at ZIM, adds that the company "has taken on a great commitment, and operates very broadly in the field. We have dozens of offices worldwide and a fleet of more than 120 ships. We are subject to many regulations, including the World Shipping Organization and other companies. And of course our customers are constantly trying to get ahead of the regulation, especially in the State of Israel, where this specific regulation is still in its infancy. "

According to Levy, "Until two years ago, it was possible to count on one hand companies that issue a corporate responsibility report.

"We have been publishing this report on our website for several years and in the local market we are one of the only companies that has committed to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We have aligned with the IMO standard, which requires a 50% reduction by 2050."

The world has evolved, understood the task before it and today demands much more.

Therefore, when it comes to global warming, we are seeing real changes recently and not just a collection of slogans.

The problems occur near our home and really affect daily life, which is a wake-up call and requires a response: "Fortunately, we are no longer behind. On the contrary, we are early," says Levy.

He adds that ZIM has already ordered 25 natural gas-powered ships, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions and pollution: "The ships are better for the environment when it comes to refueling, sailing and maintenance. Everything is much cleaner and it basically shows our commitment - the understanding that fossil fuels are about to end "Maritime and air transport, even if at the moment it is only a trend and not the final line, but Zim is already preparing, well in advance, for the day after."

Levy expands on the subject and explains that "Shipping is not the most polluting factor in the global industry. There are many polluting factors in the global supply chain, including land and air transport. Shipping has always been significantly lower in relation to them and yet it is clear to everyone that action should be taken to reduce air pollution. .The ultimate goal is zero pollution. As a large global company caring for the environment and society is our basic commitment, beyond that, customers demand it and suppliers are happy to be a part of it. There is currently no alternative to fossil fuels in the world, Streamlining during cruises or stops at the port. "

Over the years, Levy describes, "there has been little awareness of the impact of the merchant navy on the marine biological environment, especially in the transfer of biological species and organisms between geographical areas. A ship traveling from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean carries with it The needs of the ship. In the past, water was pumped together with biological strains. Zim introduced a smart system that prevents the entry of invasive strains that could cause significant environmental damage. This is just one example of a complete set designed to prevent damage to the marine environment. .

ZIM is part of the global shipping industry, which is currently facing major challenges and complex tasks. "We are constantly working and investing a lot of resources to advance scientific research projects through the knowledge and experience gained by our experts and professionals." Today, ZIM is at the forefront of technology in many areas, such as preparing for the future on clean fuels, the hot topic in the shipping world today: Some of Zim's future ships will be fitted with modern fuel tanks, pre-adapted to future clean fuels such as ammonia. With the introduction of new and clean propulsion technologies to ships, ZIM ships will be able to make the transition to fuel-free carbon emissions relatively easily and while reducing expenses. The development of the new tanks was led by ZIM experts and is the first and only of its kind in the world. "We are one of the first companies to go in this direction, because we like to make brave decisions, which to our joy have been found to be correct to this day."
