BMW has introduced the production version of the XM.

Like the study, the SUV of the sports subsidiary M is torn up on Twitter and Instagram.

Since the legendary BMW M1, whose wheels can cost a fortune, M GmbH has not developed its own model.

With the XM, that's all changing.

The Munich-based company had already teased what the SUV could look like at the end of 2021 and described the design as "bold, robust and new - beyond all norms and conventions".

However, the study was not well received by fans.

And the spirits are also divided on the series.

But it will be a while before the BMW XM rolls to the customers.

The plug-in hybrid SUV will be produced at the American BMW Group plant in Spartanburg from December 2022 and will then go on sale worldwide in spring 2023.

The Munich company does not give an exact date.

The SUV is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine (489 hp/360 kW), which is supported by an electric motor (197 hp/145 kW).

This results in a system output of 653 hp (480 kW).

BMW presents XM: "You should apologize"

Visually, the production version of the BMW XM hardly differs from the study.

The front end of the SUV with the large radiator grille remains particularly striking.

The light strips around the kidneys have also been preserved and are complemented by a gold-colored border.

The accent band on the sides of the BMW XM is also gold and is intended to evoke the black body strip of the BMW M1.

"Further historical borrowings are the two BMW emblems engraved in the flat rear window and the striking lamellar structure of the sculpted rear lights," says a press release.

BMW presents XM: SUV reminds users of a pig

The “dent” on the rear of the BMW XM, which is named after a Citroën model, has disappeared.

A discreet roof spoiler has now taken its place.

And the front and rear headlights have also changed in design.

At the front, BMW relies on the double headlights known from the 7 series, and at the rear you have also remained significantly more conservative than in the study.

However, this does not mean that the BMW XM is much better received by fans.

On Instagram, a user writes: "You should apologize for this terrible design." The association with a pig has also been preserved by many users.

Meanwhile, there is mainly praise for the interior and from a few also for the look of the SUV.

However, the majority of users find the XM terrible, as a look at the comments on Twitter and Instagram shows:

  • "An absolute insult to all legendary ///M models and ///M in general."

  • "What the hell do designers smoke these days?"

  • "Every new design from BMW just keeps getting worse."

  • "BMW M 'pig' series"

  • "A face not even a mother could love!"

  • "Man, I'd love to take this beast for a test drive!"

  • "BMW is always 4 years ahead when it comes to design. I really like this design, it's very sophisticated!"
