A five-year-old girl died at Klempowsee in Brandenburg on Tuesday evening.
The police informed SPIEGEL that the "Märkische Allgemeine" and the "Bild" newspaper, among others, had initially reported on it.
At a family celebration at the lake in Wusterhausen, the child's absence was noticed.
Rescuers with sniffer dogs and helicopters searched for the missing child with relatives for two hours before the lifeless body was found in the water near the shore.
The emergency doctor could only determine the death of the girl.
The police assume an accident and suspect that the girl drowned.
The criminal police are investigating.
