They were digging a tunnel to score a hit, probably in a nearby bank and due to the collapse of a part of the asphalt, a member of an alleged gang of thieves got stuck.
It happened in Rome where the man is being rescued, at first mistaken for a worker, even with the opening of a parallel tunnel by the fire brigade.
At least three other people, also suspected of belonging to the gang, were heard by the carabinieri.
For several hours, the firefighters have been working to rescue the man who fell inside the chasm.
The accident occurred around noon in via Innocenzo XI, at street number 42, in the Aurelio district.
