Britney Spears is asking a Los Angeles court to end the guardianship measure placing her under the control of her father, so that she can marry, according to a request filed Wednesday, September 22 by her lawyer for a scheduled hearing next week.

The American pop star, who had deemed

"abusive"

this tutelage under which she has been placed for thirteen years, recently announced her engagement to Sam Asghari.

Her father Jamie Spears officially asked the courts last month to end the guardianship measure, noting that the singer

"believes she can manage her own life"

now.

According to the request filed Wednesday by Britney Spears' lawyer, the latter

"has begun the process to hire a lawyer specializing in family law to draft a marriage contract"

, which would require the approval of guardians of the singer.

“Since the relationship between Miss Spears and this guardian

(her father, editor's note)

is broken,”

Jamie Spears' involvement in this process would go against the star's interests, argues the request.

The document therefore asks the court to

"suspend Mr. Spears"

at the next hearing, set for September 29, to replace him with a provisional guardian, until the guardianship measure is fully lifted.

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari met in 2016 on the set of a music video for the title "Slumber Party". Britney Spears, 39, had two children with her ex-husband, singer Kevin Federline. She was also very briefly married in Las Vegas to a childhood friend, Jason Alexander: the union was called off 55 hours later. The artist was placed under guardianship in 2008, after highly publicized psychological disorders. She publicly opposed her guardianship in court testimony, or in social media posts. She had said in particular that she had not been able to have her IUD removed when she wanted to have other children, and to be forced to take drugs that made her feel

"drunk"

.
